This is the equivalent.

I knew there had to be a product to fix this, though, and not just that we’re training ourselves to treat the camera as if it’s our friend. We’re too far along into this post-pandemic world (after everyone got video conferencing software and hardware) to not have a product that does most of the work for us. I did my research and found a few options. Some are center-mount cameras, some involved clear acrylic camera mounts so you can see through the the mount to the notes/person you’re talking to…like a teleprompter.

I needed to find one that also mounted on a curved monitor, so I chose the Center Cam V2. It’s small, it dangles down my screen like a bug, and I have no problem looking around it to see the person I’m talking to and the notes I’m reading. He had a house, I was in a loft. We moved in together. Then we bought a house together. We’ve never really done a full chores chart or ops session on what it takes to maintain a house and yard…and we’re still together.

For me, much of the yard work lives firmly in the category of Dan Things—alongside ladders, power tools, and anything involving an engine that might require a personality to operate. I’ve been more of a “look at the yard appreciatively from indoors after I’ve planted my flowers” person.

Then Dan had a triple bypass.

When someone comes home with very clear instructions not to lift, strain, or do anything that might burst his chest open, the categories reorganize themselves quickly.

Yard things were no longer his.

Which meant, whether I felt ready or not:

We can do yard things.

Not all yard things. I am not getting on the lawn tractor anytime soon. Dan couldn’t drive early on, but the lawn didn’t need mowing yet…so it all worked out. And it also feels like an important part of his recovery—physically and spiritually—so I’m not interfering with that.

But other stuff? The edges, the overgrowth, the spaces that quietly become overwhelming if ignored? The moles that are digging up our grass as they eat grubs and require nematodes to be sicced on them?

That’s where I’ve stepped in.

And unexpectedly, I don’t hate it.

The Tools That Lowered the Bar

The gateway drug was the most powerful leaf blower I’ve ever used. But the real shift toward not hating yard work came with our EGO electric mower.

It removes almost all the friction that used to make mowing feel inaccessible. No gas. No cords. No wrestling with a pull start while reconsidering my life (it would definitely cause Dan’s chest to burst open). I push a button, and it works. Every time. For our small spaces, its one battery’s 30-60 minutes of power is more than enough. But we also have another battery ready to go.

It’s light enough to handle, quiet enough to think, and simple enough that it turns mowing from “a whole production” into “something I can just go do.”

That distinction matters more than it sounds.

Then there’s the brush cutter—the tool for when the yard stops being polite and starts being ambitious. Saplings and other brush are no match for it. It handles the areas that don’t respond to gentle maintenance. It also ends up being the butt of a joke when I shouldn’t have used it on weeds…but we haven’t cleaned the garage yet so I don’t know where the weed whip is. Alas. Those weeds had it coming last night.

What makes it especially effective is the EGO product system behind it. The brush cutter shares a power head and battery with attachments like:

A mini chainsaw-on-a-stick/pole saw

A mini snow blower/electric snow shovel

So instead of managing multiple standalone tools, I’m learning one system and swapping capabilities. It simplifies storage, reduces cost over time, and—most importantly—lowers the mental barrier to starting.

I don’t need to master everything. I just need to change the attachment.

Hear me when I tell you, though, to do a bit more research before getting the chainsaw by EGO. I cannot get it to keep its chain on. It’s the dumbest. It might be a me thing (and a Dan thing), but it shouldn’t be as iffy as it is.

Figuring Out the Land

Alongside figuring out the tools, I’m also figuring out the land itself.

Our new, up-to-code septic mound—objectively enormous and heartbreakingly treeless—is soon to be seeded with Eden Brothers’ Burst of Bloom wildflower blend and a Late Bloomer fall-flowering mix. This is both a practical decision and an act of optimism. I used a Septic Mound and Buckthorn Replacement mixes from Minnesota Native Landscapes (MNL) last year, but so far this year, it looks a bit like a coconut with just a little of its hair on it. So, flower seeds will be flung. Let’s gild the ugly lily.

I don’t fully know what it will become. That’s part of the appeal. It’s a long game, and for now, it’s enough to know something is underway.

I also assembled and installed a Vego modern raised garden bed and, in classic fashion, went with the 32-inch height.

Is it taller than necessary? Yes.
Should I have gone with the half-height? Probably.
Will I ever have to kneel in a garden again? No, I will not.

The height turns out to be more than a luxury. It changes the experience entirely:

No bending, kneeling, or negotiating with gravity

The dog cannot trample it (a meaningful victory)

It creates a contained, intentional growing space

I filled it using a version of hugelkultur—or what I’ve come to call “whateverkulture”—layering cardboard and organic material underneath before adding soil. It uses what I have, reduces waste, and builds a base that improves over time.

I also added two small wire cloches that were unnecessarily difficult to assemble. They tested my patience in ways the yard had not yet managed.

And yet, they are doing their job—protecting my overachieving (Everbearing) strawberries from what has effectively become a backyard ornithology lab.

Design That Actually Helps

One of the more underrated features of the Vego bed is its double-walled design.

It helps retain moisture, buffers temperature swings, and keeps the soil from drying out as quickly. In practice, that means less watering, less babysitting, and a system that is more forgiving if I miss a day.

That forgiveness matters. Because this is not happening in a vacuum. Time and energy are not unlimited resources.

Which is why small efficiencies add up. Being able to have specialized soil—like the acid-friendly mix for my Jelly Bean blueberry bushes that I can grow in a container (!!!)—delivered instead of tracked down across multiple stores is not indulgent. It’s what keeps the entire effort moving.

Planting Hope

We’ve also planted fruit trees from FastGrowingTrees.com, and this is where the emotional stakes quietly rise. It’s a company that grows its products to be various sizes so that they’re arguably as ready as we want them to be for bearing fruit (within reason). For instant-gratification Andy, that goes a long way…as do their BOGO sales. Of the two apple trees and two pear trees that were planted last year, we’re already replacing one pear tree. So. It’s a trip.

Because we don’t fully know what we’re doing yet.

But the trees are in.
The bed is built.
The strawberries are cloched.
The blueberries are on acid.
The wildflowers will be flung this weekend.
The nematodes are hungry.

And as someone new to both homeownership and yard care, I’ll admit: I have a lot of hope tied up in this.

Not pressure. Just a steady, watch-and-see kind of hope.

What This Really Is

This isn’t just about tools or gardens or even yards.

It’s about what happens when life removes the option to say, “That’s not my thing.”

Because often, “not my thing” just means “not yet learned.”

I am not suddenly a Yard Person. I am a person who, in this season, is doing yard things—imperfectly, sometimes reluctantly, often with remote coaching from YouTube or Dan at a safe, non-lifting distance.

But still, doing them.

There is something deeply grounding about work that produces visible results. I clear something, and it’s cleared. I plant something, and eventually, something grows.

And there is something quietly powerful about realizing that capability can expand to meet the moment—especially when the tools, systems, and expectations are aligned to make that possible.

The Resources Help

If I find myself stepping into something unfamiliar—because I have to, not because I planned to—this is what’s helped:

Choose tools that remove friction

Look for systems, not one-off solutions

Build in ways that reduce future effort

Protect my time wherever I can

Let myself be new at it

We can do yard things.

Not all at once. Not perfectly. But enough to keep going—and enough to start seeing something take shape.

Disclosure

This article includes products I personally used in real‑life contexts. I had made it. Not in some abstract way, but in a very specific, material sense: I had enough financial stability to have someone with credentials look closely at my face, give me a facial, and recommend products that I could then just…buy. And I did. I didn’t use everything as consistently as I could have, but I made progress. Real progress. My skin was better than it had been in a long time.

And then I got laid off.

At first, nothing changed all at once. But slowly, the products ran out. Bottles got lighter. Droppers came up empty. And I found myself needing to reconsider what I was going to do—not just about skincare, but about resources in general. So I asked AI a very practical question: what has similar ingredients to what I was using, but costs a lot less?

It came back with The Ordinary.

The Ordinary looks like generic grocery store packaging from the 1980s merged with the Gap logo rebrand and decided to commit. It’s stark, a little utilitarian, slightly confusing—and I loved it immediately. Serum, in a glass bottle, with a dropper? I was a scientist now. Truly. Someone get me a white coat.

But beyond the aesthetic, I realized I agreed with it. Not every product I tried was perfect, but the brand itself made sense: ingredient-forward, affordable, accessible. And it worked. I landed on a routine—squalane cleanser, hyaluronic acid on damp skin, followed by squalane oil to seal it in—and it was magic. Hydrated, calm, simple.

I did branch out. I tried the rosehip seed oil. I tried the rice moisturizer. And they weren’t bad—but they weren’t it. Either they felt a little too heavy, or they didn’t quite give me the clarity and moisture balance I was looking for. They didn’t solve the problems I actually had. Which, in retrospect, was useful information. Not everything failing means nothing works—it just means you’re narrowing it down.

Then I added retinol in squalane at night, and everything got smoother, tighter, more even. This was the combination. This was the one. I was ready to write the glowing review.

Except I still had one problem. My face burned when I sweat. It always had. My entire life. And none of these products—even the ones that were clearly working—had fixed that.

So I asked again.

And this time, I learned that what I apparently needed to do, at 49 years old, was build something called a skin barrier. A concept no one had shared with me for the previous four decades, which feels like an oversight, but fine. To do that, I needed ceramides. I could keep using the barrier repair product from The Ordinary for what it was doing well, but I needed to bring in a bigger, more targeted product to support this whole barrier situation.

So I added a ceramide moisturizer from La Roche-Posay, which was not spa-priced, either. It’s got a super-long name and is ridiculously luxurious. It’s the one situation where a pea-sized amount is almost too much. It will last me a long time.

I started using it after cleansing my face, morning and night. And it worked. It really, really worked. No more stinging. No more burning. It was magic. I put it to the test building and filling a raised garden bed in the backyard—full sun, hauling dirt, sweating like a normal human person—and my face just…did nothing. No reaction, no irritation. Just neutral. Hallelujah.

And then, because this is how this always goes, the milia came back. Of course it did. So now I’m adjusting again—ceramide moisturizer in the morning, retinol with squalane at night—and things seem to be balancing out. But we’ll see.

That’s the process. It’s all one long fact-check. You try something, you observe, you think you’ve solved it, and then you realize there’s more information to factor in. Where I’ve landed—for now—is that The Ordinary is incredibly accessible, both in price and availability, and genuinely effective. The ceramide moisturizer was the missing piece, the thing I didn’t know I was supposed to be solving for. And the combination of both is what’s currently working.

Also worth noting: I’ve used the lip balm, but it’s really slippery. I like The Ordinary’s shampoo and conditioner. Though they make my hair so clean that I sometimes have to go back in with Pantene just to mess it up a little—add gloss, add perfume, add a bit of personality. Balance.

I don’t know what your skin needs. But I do know that if your conditions change, your approach can change with them. And sometimes what you thought was the answer isn’t wrong—it’s just incomplete.

Good luck and let me know. See what you think of The Ordinary as a lower-price solution!

Disclosure

This article includes products I personally used in real‑life contexts. Easy, delicious, low in sodium, and high in fiber, protein, and flavor.

Hungryroot has been a genuine lifesaver for us after Dan’s surgery. Dan loves to cook, and normally we share that job, but for a while it was all mine. Hungryroot made that doable. It’s technically a grocery delivery service, but what really makes it work for my brain is that it combines groceries, recipes, and solid pricing in one system that dramatically cuts down on decision fatigue. As with so many things right now, the hardest part of cooking isn’t the cooking. It’s deciding what we are going to eat and what we need to make it. Hungryroot basically solves that problem for me. I’m shopping for meals that I need to assemble.

Meals. Planned.

On top of that, there are the filters. I usually start with low sodium, then layer in high protein, and suddenly I’ve got a great set of breakfast, lunch, and dinner options that support where we are health‑wise. Since using it, we’ve cut back significantly on both takeout and sodium, and I’ve gotten back into a steady rhythm of making meals.

Price‑wise, it’s honestly comparable to regular grocery shopping—easily. And because it’s delivered, there’s no tipping involved. It just shows up in a box with some dry ice, and we’re good to go.

And, honestly, even when we’re not stressed, we’re very likely going to order restaurant meal delivery and takeout. Well, let me change that—we used to. Now, we’re cooking much more…eating more fresh fruits and vegetables. Funny how remapping neural pathways happens when things are easier, huh?

One unexpected bonus: there are three of us, and many of the recipes are built for two or four servings, which often means we have a portion left over. That becomes lunch. Huge win. More bandwidth, baby.

I’ve also really enjoyed trying some of the smaller items in the grocery section, especially snacks. Those are filterable too, which means I’ve found some real gems that actually meet our dietary needs. Hungryroot also offers ready‑to‑eat meals, which I can see being incredibly useful. I don’t tend to order them as much because I’ve done the meal delivery programs where I have to time three microwaved meals to be hot at the same time…and fail. So, I skip those. But I appreciate that they’re there.

The quality is excellent, but I’m not going to say they’re the best meals I’ve ever eaten. And that’s fine. Did I mention I’m filtering for lower sodium and higher protein? The best meals aren’t meant for everyday. And as I’ve learned in eating disorder recovery, sometimes food is just food—and that’s not a failure. That’s function. Have we loved everything? No. I’ve had some winners and a few klinkers, usually because I didn’t read the description closely enough. But I will say this: the egg‑white tortillas we used for bison tacos last night completely surprised me. Just as good as flour tortillas, and so much better for our bellies and our goals.

I’ve included a link if you want to try it too. We both get something out of the deal, which feels like a fair exchange for something that’s made everyday life noticeably easier. It looks like the current deal is that you’ll get $50 off an order of $100 or more: https://www.hungryroot.com/r/4CI3HFR4

Disclosure

This article includes products I personally used in real‑life contexts. my mother’s opioid use disorder (OUD). I’m going to throw some of it at the Sackler family, some at for-profit medicine, some at greedy doctors who loved the benefits of buddying up to the drug industry, some at sales reps who needed to sell, sell, sell…some at my mom for all the reasons. But it’s no longer all that satisfying to me to just blame people. It’s more satisfying to understand what happened. And this book helped me a lot.

Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty felt like finally getting the backstory for a movie I’d already lived through. I didn’t have an opioid problem, but my mom did, and that reality touched and twisted decades of my life. I’ve carried the fallout in my body and in my relationships for so long that it almost felt like weather—just “how it is.” This book walked in and said, “Here’s who built the storm system, and here’s how they did it.”

Patrick Radden Keefe follows the Sacklers from scrappy doctor brothers to museum-wing-level philanthropists, and he makes it excruciatingly clear that none of this was an accident. The same marketing playbook that turned Valium into a household name gets sharpened and reused on OxyContin: co-opting doctors, gaming regulators, downplaying addiction, and pushing higher doses while insisting everything was fine. Reading those details, I could feel something in me settle. I have spent so much time talking about nuance and systems and multiple truths around blame—and I still believe all of that—but it was honestly a relief to have a story where the villainy is this explicit. I needed, at least once, to be able to say: no, really, this is outrageous.

At the same time, the book doesn’t let us pretend it’s just “a bad family.” It shows how capitalism, patriarchy, and prestige institutions all worked together to protect the Sacklers while communities like mine paid the price. As I listened, I could feel my anger reorient. Not at my mom for being “weak,” not at myself for not somehow preventing it, but at the very specific people and systems that turned other people’s pain into a business model. Empire of Pain didn’t fix anything, obviously—but it gave me language and context for a story I’d been living inside for years. And sometimes, that’s exactly what we need: not less blame, but better aim.

I particularly enjoyed the audiobook version because of the fairly conversational tone for a really long and meaty topic. The days have been full, but familiar: meds, meals, rides, appointments. Then he was diagnosed with very localized bladder cancer—serious, but also “very excisable,” the kind of phrase that lets you breathe again. He has surgery in a week. In the meantime, he needs to use a catheter.

We came home from the clinic with two standard‑issue bags: a large overnight bag with a long hose that can hang off a bar, and a smaller daytime leg bag with a Velcro strap. Within hours, it was clear these were not built for living with a catheter for a month. The Velcro leg strap slipped. The big overnight bag was clumsy to carry if he needed to walk around. None of this is the nurse’s fault—they cannot possibly solve for every real‑life scenario—but I knew there had to be better options if we were going to do this with any dignity and ease.

So I went looking for something that would arrive by morning, wasn’t outrageously priced, and seemed at least reasonably tested by other humans. These two made the cut, and I’m glad they did.

<picture></picture>

ZXMOBY Invisible Catheter Stabilization Device (Leg Bag Holster)

This is essentially a soft, fabric holster that holds a leg bag against the thigh with an adjustable waistband and thigh strap, instead of relying on a single piece of Velcro around the leg.

What I liked

It actually stays put.
The biggest problem with the original leg bag was slippage; the Velcro alone couldn’t reliably hold the weight once the bag started to fill. This system uses both a waistband and thigh strap, which distributes the weight better and keeps the bag from sliding down the leg every time my dad moves.

More dignity under clothes.
The “invisible” language in the product description isn’t wrong. Once the bag is in the pocket and the tubing is threaded through the opening, it’s much less obvious that he’s wearing anything medical under his pants. He wore it to get a haircut yesterday and it was as if it didn’t exist.

Easy to empty without a full production.
There’s an opening at the bottom so the drainage port can come through. That means we can empty the bag without taking the whole holster off, which is kinder on both of us—less exposure, less fuss.

Washable and reusable.
Being able to throw the whole thing in the wash is a relief. There’s enough going on without having to baby a catheter accessory.

What wasn’t perfect

It bunches a bit at the waist.
The waistband does tend to bunch slightly at the top, especially when he’s been sitting for a while or shifting around. For us, that’s a quibble, not a dealbreaker—the tradeoff for “the bag actually stays up” is worth some minor fabric bunching.

Bottom line

If you’re dealing with a leg bag for more than a few days, this feels far more sustainable than the basic strap they send you home with. It’s not glamorous, but it turns “this is going to annoy us constantly” into “this is manageable.”

<picture></picture>

Vive Urinary Drainage Bag Holder (Crossbody / Mobility Attachment Bag)

This is a fabric case for the larger overnight‑style drainage bag, with a zipper and adjustable straps so it can be worn crossbody, or attached to a walker or wheelchair.

What I liked

It looks like a regular bag.
The nicest surprise is how non‑medical it appears. Worn crossbody, it could easily be mistaken for one of my purses. For walking around the house or going to appointments, that level of discretion is a gift.

Flexible ways to carry.
The adjustable strap means it can hang from his body, a chair, or a mobility aid, instead of swinging awkwardly from a bedrail. It adapts to however he happens to be getting around that day.

Leak-conscious design.
The case is lined and zippered, which gives me a little more peace of mind about leaks or drips. Nothing is perfect, but having a layer between the bag and his clothes/furniture feels like a small safety net.

Easy access to the drain.
There’s a bottom zipper so you can reach the valve without hauling the entire bag out. Again, this minimizes the production required just to empty it, which matters when both of you are tired and done.

Bottom line

For anyone who needs to be up and moving with a larger drainage bag, this makes the whole setup feel less like hauling medical equipment and more like carrying a regular bag that happens to be doing a very specific job.

Would I buy them again?

Yes. Both of these were “we need something by tomorrow” purchases that turned out to be genuinely helpful, not just panic buys. The leg holster occasionally bunches at the waist, but given how much better it holds the bag, I can live with that. The crossbody bag has already blended into our daily routine so well that I forget, for stretches of time, that it’s holding a catheter bag at all.

If you’ve been sent home with the standard catheter setup and are realizing—like we did—that it isn’t built for living in, these are worth a look. They won’t fix the underlying situation, but they do make this particular stretch of it more navigable, which is sometimes the best you can ask of a product.

Notes

Items Reviewed

ZXMOBY Invisible Catheter Stabilization Device (Leg Bag Holster

Vive Urinary Drainage Bag Holder (Crossbody / Mobility Attachment Bag

Disclosure

This article includes tools and accessories I personally used in real‑life contexts. Keeping an eye on my stress.

I’ve worn wearable technology through very different chapters of my life: Fitbits, two Apple Watches, and now an Oura Ring. What changed across those chapters wasn’t the technology itself, but my relationship to information—what my nervous system could tolerate, what my recovery could safely hold, and what kind of data actually supported living rather than constant self‑monitoring.

When I first used Fitbits, I was deep in my eating disorder. Technically, they were doing exactly what they’re designed to do: tracking movement, steps, activity, and patterns over time. For someone using a fitness tracker as a neutral tool, Fitbits are very good at that job. But my brain quietly reassigned their function. Movement stopped being descriptive and became evaluative. Numbers turned into permission. The Fitbit didn’t tell me how active I’d been—it told me whether I was allowed to eat, rest, or feel okay about myself.

Remapping Myself is a reader-supported publication. Please consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

That wasn’t the product’s fault. It was a reminder that tools don’t exist in a vacuum. They amplify the framework your brain is already using. At that point in my life, any device that quantified my body so precisely was always going to become a measure of worth, regardless of its intent.

When Tracking Became Joy—Briefly

My relationship with the Apple Watch was more complex. I’ve owned two. The first lived in the same mental ecosystem as the Fitbits, when activity rings still carried moral weight. Closing rings wasn’t celebratory; it was compulsory. That watch didn’t last long, because I wasn’t ready to use it safely.

The second Apple Watch arrived later, when something had shifted. I was further along in recovery and able to interact with activity tracking without turning it into punishment. That watch coincided with something genuinely joyful: virtual, asynchronous movement challenges through The Conqueror Challenge. For the first time in my life, movement wasn’t about earning food or offsetting guilt—it earned me medals and ribbons. I walked. I rode my tricycle. I completed challenges. Movement became playful and self‑directed instead of something I had to justify.

I’d originally hoped the Apple Watch would give me complete freedom from my phone. I wanted cellular connectivity so I could leave the house with nothing but a key and walk for miles untethered. That part never quite worked out. I ended up with the wireless versions and brought my phone along anyway. Still, for a while, the watch felt supportive rather than intrusive.

When Connectivity Became Too Much

Then caregiving reshaped everything.

During the pandemic, my parents moved into assisted living. My mother’s medical conditions escalated. My dad was diagnosed with vascular dementia. Messages multiplied. Alerts stacked. Calls came at all hours. The Apple Watch didn’t just notify me—it lived on my body. When my mother was taken to the emergency department in the middle of the night, the phone ringing didn’t wake me. The vibration on my wrist did.

The watch was doing exactly what it was designed to do. And my nervous system absorbed the cost.

After my mother died, the Apple Watch stopped feeling neutral. It became a PTSD object—an embodied reminder of years when being reachable at all times was necessary and survival‑based. The constant connectivity I’d once wanted had become a form of nervous‑system torture.

And yet, the story doesn’t end there.

Because I no longer wanted to wear it, I gave my still‑functional Apple Watch to Dan. It was the heart‑monitoring features of that watch that detected irregularities and led to further evaluation—ultimately resulting in his triple bypass being done without emergency, without catastrophic damage, and without the additional trauma that so often precedes open‑heart surgery.

Both things are true. The same technology that overwhelmed my nervous system helped save his life.

Choosing Quiet Instead

After my mother died, I knew I couldn’t keep wearing something that functioned like a small computer strapped to my body. I still wanted information—but I needed it to arrive quietly, without interruption. That’s when I started learning about Oura Rings. My friend Rachel had one and spoke about it with a steadiness I trusted. When I looked more closely, the distinction became clear: the Oura Ring isn’t designed to demand attention. It’s a receiver.

It collects biological information continuously, but you choose when—and whether—you engage with it on your phone. There’s no buzzing, no tapping, no constant call to respond. Because it’s so contained in what it needs to do, it also goes several days without needing to be charged—typically around four to seven days depending on use. That alone changes the relationship. Charging becomes occasional maintenance, not a daily reminder that something is attached to you.

The data itself feels more holistic and less siloed. Sleep, recovery, readiness, long‑term trends—signals about the whole system rather than metrics to optimize individual behaviors. It’s also far less triggering for eating disorder recovery. The information is broader, less granular, and harder to weaponize against myself.

I did experiment briefly with the food‑tracking feature. At first, I appreciated how it framed nutrition. But I quickly realized I didn’t want commentary on what I was eating. I didn’t need to read that a CLIF Builder Bar was a sugar bomb when the alternative that day would have been a sausage McMuffin. That kind of feedback didn’t help me make better choices—it just introduced judgment where I didn’t need it. So I turned that feature off. Knowing what to ignore is part of remapping, too.

What I’ve kept is what supports me now. The ring alerts me when my body may be getting sick. It nudges me to rest when my system is strained. And when I don’t want to look at the data at all, I don’t have to. My nervous system is noticeably calmer for it.

The Question Beneath the Tech

The real question with wearable technology isn’t which device is best. It’s what kind of information you can receive without turning it into harm. The answer changes over time. Recovery changes it. Caregiving changes it. Grief changes it. The same tool can be supportive in one chapter and destabilizing in another.

For where I am now: Fitbits are excellent for people who want traditional fitness tracking and can engage with metrics without attaching moral weight to them. Apple Watches are powerful and genuinely helpful for activity tracking and health alerts—but they can be overwhelming when your nervous system is already living on high alert. And the Oura Ring fits this season of my life because it gives me insight without intrusion.

This isn’t a ranking. It’s a record—of what worked when, and why.

Notes

Items Reviewed

Fitbit (various models)

Apple Watch (multiple generations)

Oura Ring

Peripherals & Add‑Ons I Recommend

Apple Watch

Fabric watch bands

More comfortable than silicone

Better for long wear and sensitive skin

I kept several colors and rotated them

Bedside charger that includes a watch charger

One charger for phone + watch

I no longer use the watch, but Dan uses the setup on his side of the bed

Oura Ring

Ring sizer kit (required)

Oura sizing is exact; standard ring sizes won’t work

Sizer kits often arrive next day

If purchased from Amazon, the cost is credited toward the ring

Silicone ring covers

Protects the ring from scratches and wear

Especially helpful if you use your hands a lot

Because I cover mine, I chose the least expensive ring color (black)

Travel charger (newer accessory)

Cordless, compact design

Lets you leave the main charger at home

One of the most elegant accessories I’ve used

Cost & Memberships

I’m including cost information for context, not comparison shopping.

Fitbit devices generally range from roughly $100–$300, and while Fitbit offers a Premium subscription (about $10/month or $80/year) that adds deeper insights, guided programs, and expanded health metrics, I chose not to use or pay for any premium features and used the device with its standard functionality only.

Apple Watches typically range from about $250–$800+ depending on model and configuration. Apple offers optional services (such as Apple Fitness+) and cellular plans through carriers, but I did not pay for any add‑on programs or subscriptions related to my Apple Watches; I used the watches with their core features alone. The

Oura Ring differs from both. The ring itself typically costs around $300–$450, and an ongoing Oura membership (about $6/month) is required to access most of the meaningful insights, including detailed sleep analysis, readiness scores, long‑term trends, and health signals. In my experience, the membership is essential—I find it worth the cost, and I don’t think I would have or use an Oura Ring without it.

Disclosure

This article includes tools and accessories I personally used in real‑life contexts.
